Shew and Company owner Wellman Shew apologised and attributed his actions to a pornographic addiction at his sentencing hearing on Thursday.

On the toilet, an artificial plant with a hidden compartment was found, along with the employee’s video footage.
The employee has not been identified, but she told the judge emotionally that Wellman Shew should be registered as a sex offender so that future employees “know what he did.
What is Pornography Addiction (The crime for which Wellman Shew has been accused)
Pornography addiction is the popular but unscientific application of an addiction model to pornographic consumption. Pornography is a type of compulsive sexual behaviour that can have a negative impact on one’s physical, emotional, social, or economic well-being. While the World Health Organization has classified compulsive sexual behaviour disorder (CSBD) as an “impulse control disorder,” it is not an addiction, and the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 (2013) and DSM-5-TR (2022) do not categorise compulsive pornography consumption as a mental disorder or a behavioural addiction.
Signs of Porn addiction
Whether or whether it is an addiction, persons who use pornography on a regular basis experience significant wants or cravings for sex. When they are stressed, they watch porn. They also have difficulties at work and at home. Some specialists feel there is a link between heavy porn use and relationship dissatisfaction.
The definition of how much porn is too much varies. However, most experts believe that if it interferes with your daily tasks, you may be watching too much. As an example, suppose:
- You start to grow less interested in other pursuits.
- Social encounters no longer pique your attention.
- It completely destroys your relationships.
- You give up other commitments.
- It affects your academic or professional life.
- You’re seeing it or looking at it in places that aren’t acceptable, like work or school.
- Your sexual life starts to seem empty.
- You’re hungry for something more.
- You find it impossible to quit seeing or looking at porn.
- Even if you aren’t enjoying it as much, you must persevere.
- You’ve spent at least six months viewing or consuming porn.
Porn addiction and risk factors (The crime for which Wellman Shew has been accused)
Because porn addiction is contentious in the medical/mental health profession, there is no definitive list of causes. However, there could be some hints at the causes of compulsive sexual activity. Things that can lead to porn addiction include:
- A chemical imbalance in the brain. Chemicals such as serotonin and norepinephrine regulate your mood. High levels are frequently associated with compulsive sexual activity, such as heavy porn consumption.
- Pathways in the brain change. If you become hooked, it may alter the way your brain’s circuits function. When you develop an addiction, you will have to watch porn again and over again to acquire the same amount of enjoyment.
- Disease of the brain. Epilepsy, dementia, and dopamine medication for Parkinson’s disease can all harm the portion of your brain that regulates sexual behaviour.
What is sexual harassment in the workplace? (The crime for which Wellman Shew has been accused)
US labor law has recognized sexual harassment as a form of gender discrimination since the mid-1970s. The United States recognizes two types of sexual harassment under law: behavior that creates a hostile work environment (persistent sexual behavior that interferes with an employee’s ability to work) and quid pro quo sexual harassment, which requires an employee to tolerate sexual harassment in order to keep their job, receive a tangible benefit, or avoid punishment. According to reports, African American women and girls brought many of the early instances involving sexual harassment.
Wrapping with the penalties involved with sexual harassment at the workplace
Employers are required by federal and state law to take measures to stop or prevent sexual harassment. If an employee is determined to have committed sexual harassment following an investigation, the company may reprimand the employee. In most circumstances, the punishment will be proportional to the gravity of the offense. The following are possible job sanctions for a sexual harasser:
- Warnings or reprimands
- Training and counseling are required.
- Demotions or transfers
- Salary reductions Suspensions or terminations
